What is ElevenLabs?

ElevenLabs is to AI voice what Photoshop is to images: the default professional tool and the benchmark everyone else quotes. Eleven v4, released September 28, 2026, is the company's 'most emotive' model yet: it interprets context, lands emphasis, breathes between clauses, and follows inline direction as specific as [laughs] or [said angrily in French accent]. The independent evidence backs the pitch — ElevenLabs holds the top two places on Artificial Analysis's voice arena, a blind listener-preference leaderboard: as of October 6 Eleven v4 Turbo is first at 1334 Elo and v4 second at 1321, ahead of Alibaba's Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus (1292), Cartesia's Sonic 3.6 (1278), and Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS (1275) — the cheaper, faster Turbo model edging out the flagship is the notable result. ElevenLabs' own figures — listeners preferring v4 about 75% of the time in head-to-head tests, and v4 Turbo reaching first speech in roughly 150 ms against 262 ms for Sonic 3.6 — are the company's measurements, not a third party's, and should be read that way.

What changed in practice: both v4 models cover more than 90 languages (up from 70-plus), instant voice clones now work from about ten seconds of audio, multi-speaker dialogue responds to the conversation's context rather than reading lines in isolation, and a single request handles 10,000 characters, double v3's limit. v4 Turbo is the real-time version for voice agents. Eleven v3 remains available as the previous generation, and Flash v2.5 is still the fastest and cheapest option at about 75 ms.

The platform grew into a full audio suite: a voice library of thousands of licensed voices (with revenue sharing for their owners), dubbing that preserves the original speaker's timbre across languages, conversational agents with sub-second latency, sound effects, and licensed AI music. YouTubers narrate without recording; publishers localize audiobooks in a week; startups ship voice agents on its API. August 2026 kept the pace: Eleven v3 Conversational hit general availability — the realtime member of the v3 family (~280ms latency) with the same audio-tag emotional direction across 70+ languages, built for voice agents — and Adobe made ElevenLabs voices an option inside Firefly's new speech generator, which is the kind of distribution deal rivals would trade their best voice for. Days later, Composer landed in ElevenMusic: per-section control of style, tempo, key, and lyrics, with side-by-side auditioning of alternate verses and choruses — ElevenLabs moving squarely into music production, not just narration. October 6: ElevenAgents Architect, 'a new built-in expert that helps your team launch and improve agents, just by talking or typing' — it analyzes transcripts, proposes changes, and writes simulations — arrived in alpha, reachable from Claude Code and Cursor as well as the ElevenLabs dashboard.

Free includes 10,000 credits a month — about ten minutes of speech — with no commercial license and no cloning. Starter ($6/month) adds instant cloning and commercial rights; Creator ($22/month, often discounted first month) suits YouTubers and podcasters; Pro ($99) and up serve audiobook and studio volume; usage-based API pricing powers products. Quality has a price: ElevenLabs' API page lists Eleven v4 at $80 per million characters and v4 Turbo at $40 — half the price for the model that now ranks above it — against $49 for Cartesia Sonic 3.6 and $16.50 for Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS (a 72%-off promotion runs until October 12).

Costs are per character, so long-form producers should model their real word counts — an 80,000-word audiobook lands in the Pro tier's territory. For most creators, Creator hits the sweet spot.
