What is Meta Muse?
Meta launched Muse on September 8 as 'the world's first personal AI agent built for everyone', and the 'everyone' part is the point: it's free, on iOS, Android, the web, WhatsApp, and (since September 17) the Mac, with no waitlist — and on September 18 it displaced ChatGPT as the #1 free iPhone app in the US, the same day it reached Canada and Meta opened connector-building to developers. (The only sourced install estimates: Sensor Tower's 83,000 US iOS downloads in the first three days, and Apptopia's 2.8 million US and Canada downloads in twelve days, reported by Reuters on September 22 — neither is a Meta number.) Powered by Muse Spark 1.3, it connects Gmail, Google Calendar, your bank via Plaid (read-only), and a Stripe Link wallet for purchases, then opens a browser, fills forms, and negotiates on your behalf. What impressed us most is the permission design: actions are split into read and write, you choose how often it asks, and every approval prompt offers Allow once / for this task / for this site / Always — the most legible consent model in the category.
The trade-offs are Meta-shaped. Your data lives in a per-user 'Secure VM' isolated from other users and from Meta's ad systems — but not from Meta, which retains operational access (the 'private even from Meta' Confidential VM is a future product). Training on your Muse interactions is on by default. And the reliability gap between demo and reality was visible at launch, with PYMNTS' test completing none of three purchases and Reuters reporting employees had flagged pre-launch failures. Then, on September 20, Amazon cut Muse off: users asking it to shop on Amazon.com now hit a popup calling it an 'unauthorized AI agent,' under Agent Terms Amazon added to its Conditions of Use three weeks before Muse launched. It's the first big retailer veto of a consumer agent, and it won't be the last — and Meta's response was to publish a list of merchants who said yes: Shopify, PayPal, Expedia, and Instacart, all announced September 21–22 and all 'coming soon.' Then Meta Connect (September 23) laid out the roadmap: a video avatar, an email address of Muse's own, glasses integration 'in the coming months,' a keychain device called Muse Charm shipping in December, and a list of retailers led by Walmart and Best Buy that Meta is 'adding' — everything except Mac computer use still 'coming,' as our Connect breakdown marks item by item.
September 29, 2026: Muse for Small Business. Meta added business skills and connectors — Asana, Canva, Granola, Lovable, Notion, Shopify, Slack, Stripe, QuickBooks among them — with the rule that 'nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval,' available in the US and Canada. No pricing change.
Meta Muse: pros and cons

- On Facebook Marketplace it messages strangers as you: on Sept 26 one seller's Muse gave out his home address and accepted a lowball he never approved — and Meta documents no Marketplace feature or price-floor setting
- US and Canada only, 18+; Meta publishes no connector list — Gmail, Google Calendar and Docs, Outlook, Plaid, OpenTable, Spotify, and Notion have been confirmed by Meta staff and testers
- Trains on your interactions by default; the 'Secure VM' doesn't wall off Meta itself
- Checkout reliability was poor at launch; outbound calls to US businesses are a Sept 16 beta you unlock by asking — and Reuters found Meta tested undisclosed human contractors placing some calls before rolling that back
- Facebook, Instagram, and Threads connect automatically via Accounts Center — you don't opt in
- Blocked from shopping on Amazon.com since September 20 — Amazon calls it an 'unauthorized AI agent' that doesn't identify itself
- A real Mac zero-day (local privilege escalation) was published September 21 and hotfixed within hours — but Meta shipped no advisory, version number, or in-app notice

Read actions versus write actions, two permission levels ('Ask for some actions' and 'Always ask'), and per-prompt Allow once / for this task / for this site / Always allow / Deny. Set it to 'Always ask' and Muse becomes the most controllable agent here; the design is the category's best.
Purchases with a hard stop
Every purchase means approving the exact total in chat, paid via your Link wallet or a single-use virtual card scoped to that purchase — 'Muse never sees their underlying payment details,' per Stripe. The confirmation is real; so is your liability after you tap it.
Bank visibility without bank risk
Plaid gives Muse read-only balances, transactions, and liabilities — useful for 'find subscriptions I forgot' — with no payment or transfer product attached. It can see your money; it cannot move it.
Meta Muse pricing
Free 'for most of what people need,' per Meta — Zuckerberg put the free allowance at 100 million Muse tokens a week — with Power at $20/month (500M tokens a week) and Maximum at $100/month (3B a week) for heavier use. The costs that matter aren't the tiers: training is on until you switch it off (Settings → Data controls), and approved purchases are yours under Link's terms. Set Permissions to 'Always ask,' keep a modest card in the Link wallet, and it's the safest agent on this page to actually run.

The personal agent for most people right now: free, available, and built with the category's most honest permission design — provided you spend five minutes changing the two defaults that undercut it. Instinct shows the ceiling of what agents can do; Muse sets the floor of what they should ask before doing it — and that floor is high enough to win. Can Muse spend my money without asking?
No — every purchase requires you to approve the exact total in chat. But once you approve, Stripe's Link terms make the purchase yours even if Muse misread you, and its purchase protections cover physical goods only. There's no spending limit yet.
Can Muse make phone calls?
Yes, to US businesses, in a beta that's off until you ask your Muse to make a call (Meta prioritizes people who asked). There's no help-center article about it. On September 22 Reuters reported Meta had tested human contractors placing some calls without disclosure, then rolled it back; Meta says the feature ships publicly 'only when it's ready and with the proper disclosures.' Can I install software — even Claude Code — in Muse's VM?
Yes. Meta's David Singleton: 'You can install software in it, write and compile code… it is your own Linux box.' Users report Ubuntu on 2 vCPUs, ~8 GB RAM, and a 100 GB persistent home volume. There's no terminal — you ask Muse in chat, and it installs; MacStories' Federico Viticci had it install Claude Code and sign in with his Claude account through Muse's browser. Can Muse sell things or negotiate for me on Facebook Marketplace?
It can reply to buyers, haggle, and arrange pickups from your account — but Meta has published no documentation for any of it, and on September 26 a Toronto seller's Muse shared his home address and agreed to a lowball without telling him. Keep message permissions on 'Allow once,' forbid it from sharing your address or accepting offers, and let it draft replies you send yourself. Does Muse work on Amazon?
Not since September 20, 2026. Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com, citing that the agent doesn't identify itself and stores customer credentials; Muse users see an 'unauthorized AI agent' popup. Everything else works, and within 48 hours Meta had announced Shopify (Shop Pay checkout on all Shopify stores), PayPal, Expedia, and Instacart partnerships — all 'coming soon' with no dates; Shopify merchants have been discoverable in Muse by default since launch. Does Muse train on my emails?
Muse uses your interactions to train Meta's models by default — turn it off in Settings → Data controls. Your connected data isn't shared with Meta's ad systems, but Meta retains operational access to your Secure VM; the 'private even from Meta' tier is still a future product.
