What is Nano Banana Pro?

Nano Banana started as a mysterious codename that topped blind-test leaderboards in 2025 and turned out to be Google's Gemini image model. The Pro generation made it the most practically useful image tool on the market: it treats generation as a conversation. Upload a photo of your product, your face, or your dog, and ask for changes in plain English — the model edits exactly what you asked and leaves the rest untouched, keeping the same character recognizable across dozens of variations.

That consistency is why it swallowed the UGC-ad and social-content world. Marketers generate a model wearing their product in ten settings; families turn snapshots into portraits; designers iterate a logo across mockups. It renders text cleanly enough for real posters and infographics, handles multi-image composition, and ships inside the free Gemini app, Google AI Pro plans, and the API. Every image carries a SynthID watermark — invisible provenance marking that matters increasingly in 2026. Google's new everyday model — 'based on Gemini 3.6 Flash,' per its model card — replaces Nano Banana 2 (which the API retires on October 29) and rolls out to the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, AI Studio, Flow, Stitch, and Google Ads. Google's own preference table puts 2.1 ahead of Nano Banana Pro on every axis it lists, including editing and single-character consistency, and the independent arena.ai text-to-image board agrees: 2.1 sits fifth at 1328 Elo, eighty points above Pro at 1248 — though both trail GPT Image 2.5, which holds the top two slots at around 1400. In the API it costs about $0.034 per 1K image, half of Nano Banana 2, takes 14–15 reference images (Google's two docs disagree), and adds 1:4 and 8:1 panoramic ratios; the card's own limitations note small text 'often blurry in 1k.' Nano Banana Pro remains the premium tier at $120 per million output tokens. Gemini-app limits for 2.1 haven't been published. Our hands-on, same day, in Google Flow: the realism is the story — two complex miniature-scale compositions (four hikers sheltering in a snack bag on a supermarket floor; four on a sponge raft under a running tap) came back with convincing scale, reflections, water, and crowd detail, in about 20–30 seconds per image. The catch is multi-turn editing: in a single thread, quality fell off noticeably after five or six successive edits — faces and textures softened and small details drifted — so the practical workflow is to restart from a clean generation rather than stack a long chain of changes. Rating unchanged at 4.8; the edit-chain limit is now a con.

Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) raises limits substantially and bundles Gemini's chatbot, Veo video, and 2TB storage; AI Ultra (from $99.99/month since May 2026) exists for professional volume. For most people the free tier is the best zero-cost image tool available, and AI Pro is the best $20 bundle in AI — you're effectively getting the chatbot, video, and storage wrapped around the image model.
